How do you know stuff about Snowy Owls?
We don't. Snowy told us.
So where does the Snowy Owl live?
The Snowy Owl lives North in The Arctic parts of the world; in Canada, Greenland and Northern USA. It lives in an area called the tundra. This is an area with some vegetation adjacent to the ice caps.
So no chance of seeing it downtown?
Actually you never know! The owl moves down South in the Winter to get warm. They do eat some rodents so they can pop up in some strange places, like airports!
So where does the Snowy Owl live?
Yes I know that was the first question. If we were being funny we could have said "like all birds, in a nest" but we thought it might be unwise to do so, as you might stop reading!
So what of the nests? Well the tundra is flat - very flat - with no trees. So the nests are in the ground, on top of mounds or boulders. The nest is scraped out of the ground. Occasionally they might use nests abandoned by other birds. Common sense means the nests will be located near food supplies (hunting grounds really) and going for height probably lets them scan the area for prey.
The nest will be lined with some of the vegetation that grows in the tundra and also feathers. Gotta keep warm!
So how do the owls get on amongst themselves?
There will be a gap of 1.5 kilometres to 6 kilometres between nests. So they don't mind the neighbours popping in for a loaf of bread.
